The most changeable thing about visiting Shanghai

China's entry rules for short-stay visitors have been loosened repeatedly since 2023, in several separate schemes that overlap. Any specific number you see quoted — including in this paragraph — may have moved by the time you read it. What is worth understanding is the shape of the system, so that you know what to check.

The three routes in

• ⭐ Visa-free transit. If you are passing through China on the way to a third country, you may be able to enter without a visa for a fixed number of hours. Shanghai is one of the ports where this applies. ⚠️ The critical condition is that you must be travelling onward to a different country, not back to the one you came from, and you must have the onward ticket already.
• Unilateral visa-free entry. A growing list of nationalities can enter for ordinary tourism without a visa for a short stay, with no transit condition. The list has been extended several times and is not the same as the transit list.
• An ordinary tourist visa, applied for in advance. Always available, and the answer if neither scheme covers you or if you want to stay longer.

⛔ How to check, properly

Check the Chinese embassy or consulate for your own country, and the airline you are flying with — airlines carry liability for boarding someone who will be refused entry, so their information is usually current and specific.

⚠️ Third-party summaries, including this one, go stale silently. A visa scheme that ended is still all over the internet describing itself as current.

The registration rule almost nobody mentions

⚠️ Foreign visitors in China are required to have their accommodation registered with the local police within a short window of arrival. If you stay in a hotel this is done for you at check-in and you will never think about it.

⛔ If you stay in a private apartment or with friends, it is your responsibility, and it is done in person at the local police station with your passport. This is the single most common way an otherwise careful visitor is technically in breach — and short-term private lettings to foreigners are a grey area in China in the first place.

At the border

Expect fingerprinting at an automated kiosk before the immigration desk. Have your accommodation address written down — ideally in Chinese — and your onward ticket accessible. Officers are brisk rather than hostile.

⚠️ There is no general customs problem for ordinary travellers, but be aware that some prescription medications that are unremarkable elsewhere are controlled in China. Check anything you carry regularly.
